opmerkingen | found dead, skin in collection of Koninklijk Belgisch Instituut voor Natuurwetenschappen (KBIN), Brussels, Belgium, photographed, videoed (L van de Zande et al; Kraaijeveld et al 2024). This bird was discovered in Belgium on 28 May not far from the Dutch border and was accepted by the Belgian Rare Birds Committee as the fifth for Belgium (www.belgianrbc.be). On 17 June the bird was found moribund again back in Belgium at Knokke, and brought to Opvangcentrum voor Vogels en Wilde Dieren, Oostende, West-Vlaanderen, where it died the same night. The identification caused quite some debate because some features (eg, bill structure) seemed to fit Common Eider Somateria mollissima better. Finally DNA-research and biometrics combined with the available knowledge about hybrids of the two species led to the conclusion that this bird could only be a pure King Eider (although a backcross could not be fully excluded). |
