The second record after a second-winter bird on Terschelling, Friesland, on 30 January 2005. In the winter of 2011/12, a large influx of Iceland Gulls L glaucoides occurred in the Netherlands and western Europe, including several dark immatures. The discussion on the subspecific identity of these birds increased the knowledge and resulted in new identification criteria.
